The Gallup City Council approved use of $108,742.76 from the General Fund to cover a furnishing shortfall for the Public Safety Building and Municipal Court at its Jan. 6 meeting. Councilor Linda Garcia moved to approve the request; the motion, seconded by Councilor Ron Molina, passed on a roll-call vote with all members present voting yes.
Project Manager Keegan Mackenzie-Chavez explained that surplus funds from the Police Department were reallocated but a procurement delay and an incorrect use of a GSA contract by the design firm caused higher prices. Purchasing Director Frances Rodriguez said obtaining separate contracts or prices for each item would have caused further delay and potential additional cost increases. Court Administrator Erin Gutierrez highlighted staff growth, inadequate and outdated furnishings and the impact on daily court operations.
As a cost-saving measure, staff removed kennel shading from the contract and will construct that element in-house using Public Works and Parks staff. Council discussed use of donated or existing furniture and emphasized prudent procurement practices. The Council vote approved the funding transfer and authorized staff to proceed with procurement adjustments.
