Public hearing: Barbers Hill describes accelerated instruction efforts, cites HB 5 requirements

The Barbers Hill Independent School District held a public hearing Oct. 27 on the effectiveness of accelerated instruction, a requirement under House Bill 5. Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Chloe Yowell told trustees the district is using flex scheduling at Barbers Hill High School to deliver targeted interventions paid for with compensatory education funds.
Yowell noted the district provided a chart summarizing interventions, associated costs and outcomes and highlighted college-readiness results elsewhere in her report: based on last year's PSAT scores the district has one National Merit Semi-Finalist, Joshua Zamora, and two Commended Scholars, Kinzie Jacobs and Ethan Prawitz. "The Accelerated Instruction efforts at Barbers Hill High School continue this fall utilizing our flex schedule," Yowell said. The hearing satisfied the public-notice and reporting requirement that districts inform the public about how accelerated instruction funds are being used and the results achieved.
