Barbers Hill trustees renew District of Innovation plan and add exemptions

The Barbers Hill ISD Board of Trustees voted Jan. 26 to renew the district’s District of Innovation (DOI) plan and approve several amendments intended to give the district greater local control over operational and instructional matters.
Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Chloe Yowell told trustees that the DOI committee reconvened to evaluate the effectiveness of existing exemptions and recommended reaffirming them while adding targeted amendments. The changes discussed include exemptions related to probationary contracts, instructional facilities reporting, grievance processes, course syllabi and the acquisition of library materials. The board approved the proposed amendment by voice vote (6–0; one trustee absent).
Yowell said the amendments aim to reduce administrative burden, protect campus safety considerations and allow educators to focus more on student achievement. “move to approve the proposed amendment to the District of Innovation plan,” the minutes record; the motion was made by Trustee George Barrera and seconded by Trustee Clint Pipes.
