Board authorizes superintendent to report inability to afford three-point seat belts under SB 546

At the May 27 meeting the board considered requirements in the Texas Transportation Code and Senate Bill 546 requiring three-point seat belts on school buses. Trustee Debbie Garza moved to authorize Superintendent Victoria S. Joslin to file a report with the Texas Education Agency stating the district’s budget does not allow purchase of buses equipped with the required seat belts; Monica Buentello seconded the motion and it passed 7-0.
The motion documents the board’s assessment that current district funds are insufficient to comply with the purchase requirement and initiates the formal reporting step to TEA. The board did not approve new purchases at the meeting; the action was limited to authorizing the report.
