Newport utilities begin parallel testing of PAA disinfecting process; fecal tests 'all been zeros'

WWTP/WTP Superintendent Howard reported April 20 that the city has completed headworks and digester maintenance and is working with JUB Engineers on a new peracetic acid (PAA) disinfecting process. Howard said parallel testing will continue until laboratory results from the new process match established methods.
"PAA has been used a lot in food production since the 1960's. It is more cost effective," Howard told the council, according to the minutes. He also reported, "The fecal testing has all been zeros." The superintendent said lift stations on the south side have issues that staff are addressing and that check valves and meters are being installed in the water wells.
Howard noted that staff will continue parallel testing and that the laboratory is nearly dialed in; no schedule for full implementation was recorded in the minutes. Due to staffing shortages the city plans to hire a temporary summer maintenance worker.
