Belen council approves travel for four firefighters to FDIC training

The Belen City Council on Feb. 2 approved out-of-state travel for Deputy Chief Michael Wessels, Lt. Christopher J. Martinez, Fire Engineer Stephen Carbajal and Fire Fighter Jared Geherty to attend the FDIC International Conference April 10–25, 2026.
Deputy Chief Michael Wessels presented the request and described the department’s plan to use conference training to expand cross‑training among staff. Councilor Frank F. Ortega said he supports the training and asked that staff follow up with emergency operations center (EOC) tabletop exercises to ensure readiness for complex incidents.
The motion to approve the travel was made by Councilor Frank F. Ortega and seconded by Councilor Steven L. Holdman; the roll‑call vote was recorded as four yes, zero no. No costs were specified in the council record.
