Kathleen Pickering, Belen Public Library liaison to the Historic District Board, told the council the city had coordinated with the State Historic Preservation Division and identified properties within the city for the historic-district update. Pickering said the items the state requested largely reflected work already in place and that planning and zoning staff helped consolidate the updates.
Councilors had a brief discussion about Old City Hall funding; City Manager Roseann Peralta said the city has requested monies for Old City Hall rehabilitation but has not received them. No public speakers opposed the ordinance. Council voted to adopt the historic-district ordinance updates by roll call.
Pickering and staff said the changes are intended to smooth review and provide clearer guidance for property owners in identified historic areas.
