The board was notified on Aug. 3 that the estate of John S. Cheadle has designated a $500,000 charitable donation to benefit the King George County Animal Shelter.
Sheriff Giles described the donation as restricted to shelter uses and said the executor of the estate was present. "The donation is intended to support the shelter's mission of providing care, protection and services for animals within the community," Giles said. He noted that county policy and generally accepted governmental financial practices require the board to formally accept donations with donor-imposed restrictions before funds are received and appropriated.
Board members expressed appreciation for the gift but noted they could not vote on acceptance the same night because of a notice/timing rule; the matter will return to the board for formal acceptance at the next allowed meeting. Staff said that, upon acceptance, the funds would be recorded as restricted revenue and used solely for purposes consistent with donor intent.
