Brenham ISD board approves library purchases after SB 13 vetting

Head librarian Charlotte Polk told trustees the district follows a multi-step vetting process before adding titles to campus libraries, including vendor reviews, librarian recommendations and a 30-day public posting for comment as required by recent state rules. "There is no TEA approved list," Polk said, explaining that the district must post ISBN-specific lists and allow community review under the newly active reconsideration policy.
Polk described campus-level leveling, parental access to the online catalog and a parent portal to block particular copies, and said the materials on the packet had no public comments during the 30-day posting. A motion to approve the purchase of library books as presented was made and seconded, and the board voted unanimously to adopt the acquisitions. "I do it for the kids," Polk added when board members thanked her for the vetting work.
Trustees asked about workload and whether the review process is done by a team; Polk said campus librarians compile requests and she performs multiple rounds of vetting before bringing a list to the board. Members expressed appreciation for the transparency and asked staff to continue updating parents about the catalog and blocking options under district procedures.
