The county administrator told commissioners that Penobscot County has been under‑taxed and will need to seek legislative approval to reset the jail tax cap for 2027.
"By law, in order for us to move forward in 2027, we have to get legislative approval," the administrator said, recommending outreach to Representative McIntyre and submission to the Joint Standing Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety. The administrator said the county and budget committee will need to account for an accrual in excess of $12 million for 2027 budgeting.
Commissioners discussed timing and agreed to begin the legislative process; a motion to authorize the administrator to contact Representative McIntyre and start the necessary paperwork carried in the meeting minutes as "motion carries."
