The Chico Independent School District Board of Trustees voted on April 22, 2026, to interview two applicants for the district superintendent position, approving the motion 6-0. Trustee Ubaldo Garcia moved to approve “Two (2) as the number of applicants to be interviewed,” and Trustee Cassie Skinner seconded the motion.
The vote record published in the meeting minutes lists Trustees Kyle Grimes, Chris Laney, Chance Earp, Ubaldo Garcia, Phillip Liebel and Cassie Skinner as voting yes; Trustee Jada Ayala was recorded as absent. The action followed a lengthy closed session in which the board said it would discuss superintendent applicants and other matters under exemptions to the Texas Open Meetings Act. As the Board President stated when announcing the closed session: "In accordance with the Texas Open Meetings Act, the Chico ISD Board of Trustees on April 22, 2026, at 6:01 p.m. will convene in a closed meeting to consider and discuss any of the following" (enumerating the statutory items).
The board did not disclose the identities of the applicants or schedule public interview dates in the open minutes. The transcript indicates the board returned to open session at 9:25 p.m. and completed its vote on the number of applicants; the meeting adjourned at 9:39 p.m.
