A motion to adopt the Bluebonnet mathematics curriculum for grades K–Algebra I failed at the Canutillo ISD Board meeting March 24 by a 4–3 margin.
Mrs. Barnes moved to adopt Bluebonnet and Trustee Ortega seconded. The roll call was Mrs. Barnes—Yes; Ms. Borrego—No; Mrs. Maldonado—No; Mr. Martinez—No; Mrs. Ortega—Yes; Mr. Rodriguez—No; Mrs. Zuniga—Yes. Trustee Ortega commented during her vote that she voted yes and "she believes that every child learns differently." The board did not adopt Bluebonnet.
Trustees' discussion during the curriculum presentations centered on alignment with TEKS, training for staff and the availability of comparative data. With Bluebonnet rejected and STEMscopes adopted separately, the district will proceed with the approved STEMscopes implementation.
