Gretchen Needs, OCCK Mobility Specialist, described the paratransit application process and eligibility rules, saying staff use an info sheet to collect mobility needs and that an approved status typically doesn't require reapplication for five years unless needs change.
Needs said that medical transportation via Medivan is covered for no charge through Medicaid and through partner agencies that offset cost. "With Medicaid we are able to go anywhere in the state and we do frequently travel to take people to Kansas City for medical appointments," Needs said. She outlined submission methods (webpage, office, mail) and advised callers to allow advance notice—staff said 24 hours is preferred for scheduling but OCCK will try to accommodate shorter-notice medical trips.
Needs also discussed that paratransit is intended for riders who cannot use fixed-route service safely and that staff will assist with travel training. OCCK said it will review applications and confirm mobility needs in order to provide appropriate accommodations.
