At the public-comment portion of the Aug. 4 meeting, a community member identified as Isis read a prepared statement urging the committee to name the Elvium building for her late mother, Stephanie Bernard, who she said "worked for Madison School District for over 32 years" and "encouraged early literacy and helped countless children build confidence and skills."
Isis said Bernard "was truly an angel on earth" and described how Bernard remained connected to the school up until her hospitalization. Moderator staff thanked Isis for her remarks after the three-minute comment. Committee members and staff later cited Bernard's widespread family and staff support during a review of written submissions; Chelsea told members that "Stephanie A. Bernard Elementary School" received broad support from family members, former students, and colleagues in the public comment record.
Committee members acknowledged the emotional weight of family testimony and said that such submissions were among the most compelling when applying the district's rubric.
