Resident urges action on long-vacant Chetwood property; council schedules study session on code enforcement

Karen Webb of 3024 Lazy Lane told council she has seen possums, snakes and other pests at a house on Chetwood that she believes has been vacant for roughly 20 years and described it as a "public nuisance" and health hazard. She urged condemnation or other abatement remedies and said she may organize a neighborhood petition if enforcement does not follow.
City manager Jodie told the council a study session will be held Aug. 12 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to review the International Property Maintenance Code, zoning rules and code enforcement tools and to consider options for addressing dilapidated properties and abatement spending. Jodie said the city cannot always repair private fences and that condemnation is not always an appropriate remedy for relatively minor maintenance problems, so staff will propose intermediate remedies and legal options.
