Fairfield ISD board approves design development phase for new high school

The Fairfield ISD Board of Trustees on Jan. 12 voted 7-0 to approve the design development phase for a new high school and authorized Claycomb Associates Architects to proceed to the construction documentation phase.

Jeffrey Floyd of Claycomb Associates reviewed a collaboration meeting with high school staff and presented the design development plan. "I move to approve the Claycomb Associates Architects Design Development phase so they can proceed to the Construction Documentation phase of the project," a trustee motion recorded in the minutes passed unanimously. Retired Cameron ISD superintendent Kevin Sprinkles described the "learning on display" concept used in his districts recent Career and Technology building, saying it increased engagement by mirroring collaborative work environments.

During public comment, Keith Whitaker urged the board to reconsider the amount of glass in the design, saying extensive glazing on building exteriors and in CTE/general classrooms could create safety risks and distractions and questioned placement of administration and counselor offices. The board approved the design development phase despite the comment and directed staff and the architect to continue refining construction documents.

Board members and the architect did not record a formal change to the design at the meeting; the approval allows the project to advance to the next design stage and does not itself authorize construction spending.
