Students tell LRSD leaders they feel supported but point to peers’ isolation as barrier to safety and purpose

Student panelists said many peers who lack trusted adults or social connections may not feel safe or find purpose at school; they recommended proactive teacher check-ins, clubs and exposure to career pathways.
A cross-section of LRSD middle- and high-school students told the convocation that supportive teachers and safety teams make them feel safe, but many peers remain isolated and lack trusted adults to turn to. Students recommended more proactive outreach by teachers, extra-curricular access and programs that connect students to opportunities.
One student said, "I do feel safe in my school, but I feel like some students don't because, they don't have an outlet of, like, friends or teachers they can go to." Students linked a sense of purpose to participation in clubs, career-technical programs and teacher encouragement and urged staff to help students find a place to belong early in the year.
