Community Development Director Amal presented the department’s FY26 annual report, describing permit activity, code enforcement, housing projects and urban renewal work.
Amal said the office processed 104 residential permits with an estimated value of about $4.2 million and 23 commercial permits with an estimated $3.7 million. She described a set of multifamily projects in varying stages — including phased developments at Sherwood and Alta Vista — and noted that developers secured tax credits and other incentives for some projects. "We operate through zoning regulations, building codes… and we do nuisance abatement, enforcing chapter 24," Amal said, summarizing the department’s range of work.
On enforcement, Amal said staff completed more than 2,000 nuisance inspections and resolved about 1,400 cases during the fiscal year; the department placarded 49 addresses and released 24. She also told the council the rental‑housing program maintains a registry of roughly 2,900 units and that staffing constraints affected inspection capacity. The report listed ongoing priorities (housing, neighborhood stabilization, strategic partnerships) and flagged brownfields and airport‑area planning as near‑term focuses.
Councilors thanked staff for the workload and asked questions about inspections, permit pull rates and specific redevelopment projects. Amal said the department is using GIS and new software to improve tracking and public access to maps and information.
