Taylor Smith introduced a resolution proclaiming May 14 as Praxe Awareness Day in Horry County and said the measure focuses on childhood apraxia of speech, a condition she described as making it difficult for affected children to communicate certain sounds. "Praxe is a condition that affects everyone, but, specifically, this resolution is about the condition of children," Smith said, and staff explained the condition can make it harder for children to communicate and reach their potential without speech-pathology support.
Parent Beth Ann Sawicki provided public testimony describing her son’s experience with childhood apraxia of speech and urged the county to raise community awareness and support speech therapists. "We just wanna make sure that the community knows what it is and has the awareness and can help those kids that just wanna be heard," Sawicki said. The committee moved the resolution, a second was recorded and the item passed unanimously by voice vote.
