Board holds hearing on student code of conduct; proposes folding student 'bill of rights' into code

The board held the required public hearing on the student code of conduct and district safety plan before adopting changes for the upcoming school year. Superintendent Dr. Ackerman said the district proposes updating the code to incorporate the existing standalone student 'bill of rights' (policy 50‑20) and to add clearer language drawn from the Gun‑Free School Act concerning possession of firearms and accommodations for students with disabilities.

Dr. Ackerman also said the code will include clarifying language around new concerns from the prior school year: rules for e‑bikes (students under 16 may not operate them; 16‑year‑olds must meet requirements) and a prohibition on possession of shell casings or similar items that could disrupt the educational environment or create fear. Staff emphasized the district's safety plan remains largely regulatory and unchanged. Public comment on these particular documents was invited and none was offered during the hearing; the superintendent encouraged families to email comments for consideration before the board considers adoption on Sept. 2.
