Newton County announced a tentative 2.16% increase in property taxes that would raise the county millage rate to 8.567 from an estimated no-increase rate of 8.386. The county published two example impacts in the notice: a home with a fair market value of $350,000 would see an approximate tax increase of $24.62, and a nonhomestead property valued at $300,000 would see an approximate increase of $21.72.
The county scheduled two public hearings to allow community comment: July 28 at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., and an additional hearing on Aug. 4 at 6:30 p.m., all at the Newton County Historic Courthouse, 1124 Clark Street, Covington. The notice set a tentative millage and explained the estimated change in millage and the dollar impacts used for public examples. No vote on adopting the increase was recorded during the July 28 session.
The hearing drew multiple speakers from the public expressing concern about affordability, assessments and the distribution of tax burdens. The county said further consideration will follow the public-comment period and any formal decision would be reflected in later board action or a subsequent meeting notice.
