Fire Chief Ian Kemp said the city initially entered hazard-mitigation grants in May 2023 for roof, door and window hardening. An architect review during implementation identified non-hurricane-rated bay doors as a weak point; staff requested an increased grant award to add rated bay doors and the state agreed to expand funding. The modification increases federal funding for Fire Station 1 from approximately $251,717.28 to $589,247.10 and for Station 2 from approximately $224,335.84 to $515,637.00 (combined increase of $628,830.98). The city's non-federal match rises from $52,894.79 to $122,764.90; the grant will also pay subrecipient management costs.
Chief Kemp said the improvements should allow firefighters to shelter in-place through many storms rather than evacuate to other hardened facilities; council approved the resolution accepting the modification.
