Youth commissioners install 'Little Libraries' and council receives annual report

Members of the Bakersfield Youth Commission presented completed "Little Libraries" — painted, stocked boxes installed at schools, parks and community sites — as their annual project aimed at improving literacy and book access across the city.
Commissioners described their site choices and community partnerships: Imani Matharu said her box at Prosperity Elementary was painted by a Stockdale High art class; Mia Clifford placed a box at Honey I'm Home and Jasmine Bajwa located hers at CSUB to improve access for students. Staff noted the project was completed within budget and that boxes will be registered on LittleFreeLibraries.org.
Council members praised the commissioners for civic engagement and accepted the youth commission report by unanimous vote, asking staff to photograph and promote the installations in council communications.
