Youth commissioners install little libraries across Bakersfield to boost literacy

The Bakersfield Youth Commission presented its annual project to the City Council on Aug. 5: a set of painted, donated-book-filled "Little Libraries" placed at locations across the city to encourage reading and improve access to books.
Commissioner Claire Michael described a box placed at Kalamazoo that was decorated with help from local arts partners. "We hope that these little libraries become more than just places to find books...encourage curiosity, imagination, and a love of reading throughout Bakersfield," she said. Commissioners said the boxes were built and decorated by student volunteers and filled with donated books; partners included school AP art classes and the Arts Council of Kern.
Councilmembers praised the efficiency and civic engagement of the youth commissioners. Staff said the program was completed under budget, that each library will be registered with the Little Free Library network, and that locations were chosen for safety and accessibility near schools and community centers. The council received and filed the report.
