Denise Gary Pandell urged council members to uphold federal law and criticized framing undocumented entrants as mere immigrants, citing “Title 8 section 1182” and urging officials who would not enforce the law to leave office. She told the council the “sacred obligation” is the city’s safety and security. In contrast, speakers who support sanctuary status argued for protections and dignity for immigrants and against fear-based rhetoric.
Other public speakers broadened the debate to local government priorities: several residents asked the council to focus on homelessness, downtown safety and police support, while others pressed for more transparency from an ad hoc multimodal committee. The large turnout — multiple speakers on both sides and visible shows of support — prompted the mayor to note strong feelings on the issue and to extend some speaking time so in-person commenters could be heard.
