Student commissioner presents research on turning invasive plants into soil-rebuilding biomass

Esther Park, an ex officio student commissioner, presented her project on recycling invasive plant matter into sterilized biomass intended to restore degraded soils and support native species.
Park described collecting soil and invasive-plant samples from local sites (Duke Mason and Montrose parks), sterilizing plant material by burning or heating (cited 400°F oven) or boiling to make mulch, and running six-week propagation trials with mung beans and poppies. She reported preliminary results: mung beans performed best with mulch while poppies preferred the powder additive, and she attributed some variability to conducting trials in winter months with uneven sunlight.
"So by doing that, we would take the nutrients that the invasive plants stole out of their, our ecosystem and then put it back into our environment for native plant species to take," Park said while describing the project hypothesis and early outcomes. Park also described community outreach (Earth Day planting booth) and competitions where the work won regional and national recognition.
Park said the next steps include additional trials, testing in community gardens or library garden sites, and exploring whether the additive could reduce synthetic fertilizer use in local plantings.
