Herbert Milano, a longtime Glendale activist, told the Sustainability Commission on Aug. 6 that the city's meeting minutes often fail to capture speakers' names and the substance of public comments, which he said prevents meaningful public participation.
"Without effective public participation, much of the ideas and the passion that people have will not be recorded if it isn't put in the minutes," Milano said, urging the commission to record at least brief summaries of comments so they are searchable.
Commissioners responded by describing current practices and staff said archival video and linked agendas are already preserved online. Jillian, a staff member, told the commission the city's archives let users search agenda materials and link to video and that the information technology division is exploring automated transcript capabilities. Commissioners agreed to consider whether the commission should adopt additional minute-taking practices.
