County approves Champlin contract and April tire-collection event at West Yard

Sedgwick County moved forward March 20 with a contract to provide waste-tire transportation services and approved a countywide tire-collection event April 10–12, 2025. Environmental Resources recommended accepting Champlin Tire Recycling's proposal at $198 per scale ton.
Staff said the event is for residents and certain businesses (businesses that collect fees for disposal are ineligible). Catherine Johnson of Environmental Resources explained the logistics: vehicles will be directed on arrival with separate lanes for small vehicles, larger vehicles and semis; residents will unload tires themselves and county staff will pile and clear them. "So, yes, it will be at the West Yard at 4701 Southwest Street for those 3 days," Johnson said.
The department said Champlin will remove collected tires after the event, often recycling or refurbishing tires for reuse where possible. Funding for the event comes from the solid waste fee approved as part of the Board of County Commissioners' solid waste update on June 12, 2024. A motion to accept Champlin's proposal was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
Staff noted the county has followed a recent pattern of alternating e-waste and tire events; continuation will be subject to future board approval and available budget.
