Board approves $390,377 ambulance purchase to expand EMS frontline fleet

The Sedgwick County Board voted March 20 to authorize purchase of one ambulance from American Emergency Vehicles (AEV) through HGAC contract AEVAM10-23 for $390,377.
An EMS and Fleet Management representative told the board that Sedgwick County's EMS fleet includes 29 frontline ambulances, 27 of which were manufactured by AEV, and that ambulances are made to order with various layouts. The presentation said the county requires construction standardization to facilitate timely response and safe working conditions. The representative said the specifications meet the HGAC base standard and are roughly 5% customized for Sedgwick County's needs.
Deputy Chief Brian Nicholas answered board questions about frontline versus reserve ambulances, explaining that frontline units are in daily rotation while reserves are held for standbys and large events. "Well, right now we have 10," Nicholas said when asked about the county's reserve count; he added that this purchase would make it 11 and that hiring is underway to staff planned additional 12-hour medic units in 2025.
A motion to utilize the HGAC contract for the purchase was moved and seconded; the board approved the motion by voice vote.
The board did not attach additional conditions to the purchase during the meeting.
