Board recognizes National Nurses Week; nurses cite contract gains and call for continued support

Jaylene Richards, interim health director for Solano Public Health, thanked the board and described the varied roles of county nurses across perinatal care, behavioral health, foster care, long-term care and public health outreach. "Our nurses change lives every day," she said, adding that public health nurses are now visiting encampments to serve unhoused populations.
Sharmel Sala and other county nurses described trauma-informed, culturally responsive approaches, home visiting and community-based supports used to reach families. One speaker who identified themselves as representing county clinicians said the "ratification of our contract has revitalized our hearts" and urged the board to keep workforce support a priority.
The item was adopted as a ceremonial resolution but presenters framed it as an opportunity to sustain investments in nursing recruitment, retention and wellbeing.
