At a July 20 meeting of the Oak Bluffs Short-Term Rental Ad Hoc Committee, staff reported that 62 properties appear to be operating as short-term rentals but are not registered with the state. Adam Petkus reviewed the dataset presented July 13 and told the committee it "identified 62 properties operating as short-term rentals that are not registered with the state." Hester Agudosi raised questions about the accuracy of the state registration data, noting discrepancies between the state list and properties actively rented in Oak Bluffs.
Committee members discussed whether state registration accurately reflects local activity and whether more reliable local data is needed to support any regulatory approach. Petkus said a local registry could capture more accurate information and improve compliance compared with the existing state system. The committee agreed to continue work on a bylaw outline that would address registration and other components and scheduled a follow-up meeting for July 27 at 4:30 p.m.
