The board received an introductory briefing on "Newport 2037," the city's decadal comprehensive-plan update, from Mindy Watts of Interface Studio.
Watts said Interface Studio leads a consultant team that includes local subconsultants for economics and climate resiliency and described a six-phase schedule: startup, analysis/initial engagement, vision and goals, preliminary strategies and a draft plan, followed by state review. The consultant plans multiple public touch points over the next 18 months, including tabling at the Aquidneck Growers Market this week (weather permitting), a large visioning open house in early December and an online collaborative map and survey to collect resident priorities.
Watts told the board the plan must comply with the statewide decadal update mandate. She emphasized that the update will not start from scratch but will build on many prior plans and studies to knit together a shared vision for land use, housing, transportation and resiliency. She invited board members and the public to participate actively in upcoming events and said the consultant team would brief City Council next week.
