Resident urges slower review and more public engagement over addition to historic telephone building

During the council’s first public‑comment period, Teresa Craft introduced herself and urged caution on a developer request that she said had been advanced hastily by the planning board. Craft said the planning board chairman “snapped at” board members and pushed the project to a vote despite ongoing resident opposition, and she asked the council to reexamine the outdated comprehensive plan and hold community forums at Memorial Hall.
“During last week's planning board meeting, there was no notable discussion regarding the controversial new addition to the historic telephone building,” Craft said, asking that the council allow more public engagement and not change zoning or other rules merely to ease a developer’s financial burden. She also lamented disruptions to the Parade of Green and said parked cars and a shortened route left many residents unable to participate.
The mayor acknowledged the public comment and reminded the council there would be a second opportunity for public comment later in the meeting. The public hearing related to the amended concept plan referenced earlier in the agenda was adjourned to April 20.
