Emergency management urges residents to sign up for Civic Ready ahead of statewide tornado drill

Sedgwick County’s deputy director of Emergency Management, Cody Sharvitt, briefed the commission on Severe Weather Preparedness Week and encouraged residents to participate in the statewide tornado drill and to sign up for Civic Ready alerts.
Sharvitt said Kansas ranks first in high‑end severe‑weather reports per 10,000 square miles and urged residents to build disaster kits, make plans and ensure multiple communications channels are in place. He noted the county will sound outdoor warning sirens at 10:00 a.m. for a five‑minute test coinciding with the statewide drill and said county notifications will go to those signed up for Civic Ready; he added the county has about 5,000 Civic Ready signups in a population of roughly 500,000 and urged broader participation.
Commissioners thanked emergency management and asked staff to continue public messaging about safety classes and drill participation. Sharvitt also noted a schedule of local preparedness classes and a larger Wichita presentation scheduled for March 24.
