Chair Andrew said the town must enact required regulations, flood insurance studies and rate maps to maintain eligibility in the National Flood Insurance Program, and presented the draft packet to the board. "This is a draft," he said, noting the packet had been circulated to members about two weeks earlier.
Board members asked about the maps that define special flood hazard areas. A committee member asked whether the maps reflected varying areas of special flood hazard; Chair Andrew said FEMA maps have been available for years and that a flash drive and paper copies are in his office and with Maureen for review. The chair said the town's floodplain area has been reduced compared with the old map.
A motion to send the draft law to DEC for review was made, seconded and approved by voice vote. The board did not adopt the law at the meeting; the vote authorized submission for state comment and further revisions. Officials said additional technical edits — including a wetlands map to be added to the appendix and small verbiage changes — would be incorporated before final consideration.
What happens next: the town will transmit the draft and await DEC comment. The board indicated they will review any DEC feedback and then schedule subsequent steps toward formal adoption if required.
