Mayor's nominee Michael McDowell recommended to Arts Commission

Mayor Jim Donchas introduced McDowell at the committee meeting, describing him as an active participant in local music and the owner of The Spot, a nonalcoholic Main Street venue. McDowell told the committee he’d attended Arts Commission meetings as a guest and wants to bring his experience as a musician and downtown business owner to broaden programming across the city. “I’d like to see a lot more awareness on the arts, so that we can bring more people into the community,” McDowell said.
Members praised McDowell’s work with young performers and all‑ages programming. Alderman Paula Johnson said she had visited The Spot and “applaud[ed] you for being nonalcoholic,” while Alderman Ben Clemens called McDowell’s mix of business and artistic experience an asset. The committee moved and took a roll‑call vote; the clerk recorded five yays and no nays, so the committee recommended McDowell’s appointment to the full Board of Aldermen for confirmation.
The nomination will next be considered at the Board of Aldermen meeting; the committee did not record any amendments or conditions attached to the recommendation.
