The Village of Nassau board considered a request from County Waste to change collection days for roughly 20 Route 20 stops from Tuesday to Friday and to use a single-arm automated truck. Chair (S1) summarized the contractor's one-line letter and emphasized that it did not meet the contract's requirements for a formal amendment: “We asked them to propose changes in the contract. So they should have sent something that said, we are proposing a change to section…,” S1 said.
Members focused on operational and liability concerns. Several members questioned whether the single-arm's reach would be sufficient for cans placed on sidewalks and whether residents would reliably reposition cans; S7 warned the arm's reach is limited and that some cans sit on sidewalks rather than the road. The contract requires a contractor-approved resident notification no later than 30 days prior to a proposed route change, and board members said any amendment must specify who bears liability if cans cannot be collected.
The board agreed to draft a village letter and a formal contract amendment for County Waste to sign, subject to approval by the village attorney and the mayor. A motion to be 'amenable to changing the contract' to allow Route 20 pickups on Fridays was moved and seconded and passed by voice vote. Staff (S1 and S2) will draft the letter and circulate the amendment language for review before execution.
