Michael B. Lund, presenting the Public Safety Commission report, told the board the Daniels County Sheriff's Office has requested three new vehicle radios and asked the commission to consider funding and equipment allocation.
"They're $70,000 a piece," Lund said when discussing the radios and the commission considered drawing funds from the 911/public safety levy or coordinating purchases with fire and ambulance partners. The group also discussed trade-in options, whether older radios can be upgraded or repurposed, and the possibility of using Stone Garden grant funding for some radios.
Lund reviewed a separate quote for a Quantar/repeater upgrade and moving a repeater to a new tower site; after removing an unneeded duplexer the upgraded quote still totaled roughly $41,235. The TAC officer's analysis also showed a proposed new administrative position would cost about $198,000, and the commission agreed that position is "off the table" for now.
Commissioners asked staff to meet with fire and ambulance agencies to determine interoperability needs and identify the most appropriate funding source before purchasing.
