Council approves emergency ordinance authorizing Head Start teachers for Safety City program

Chief Miller described Sylvania's annual Safety City program—two sessions (morning fully enrolled; some afternoon openings)—and explained staff provide training to teachers, aides and a police aide who helps run the program's safety demonstrations for children. Council member Westfall introduced Ordinance 76 (authorizing the mayor and director of finance to enter into agreements with Head Start teachers, teachers and aides for the Sabania Safety City program) and moved for passage as an emergency measure; the motion was seconded and approved by unanimous voice vote. Chief Miller said the program typically uses teachers from the school district and that coordinator Valerie Schneider helps recruit instructors.
