Avon landmarks panel asks Council for help preserving 1840s Colvin Sweet House
Summary
Members of the Avon Landmarks Preservation Commission asked Council for financial help to preserve the Colvin Sweet House at 32135 Detroit Road, saying the building is structurally sound and could be incorporated into a nearby redevelopment if the developer cooperates.
Cynthia Murnyack-Czarnecki, chair of the Avon Landmarks Preservation Commission, told Council the Colvin Sweet House (early 1840s) at 32135 Detroit Road possesses "significant architectural history" and formally requested financial assistance for its preservation and rehabilitation. She said the Commission toured the interior and exterior and found the house "in need of cleaning up and some TLC," not in active disrepair.
Theresa Szippl, a Commission member, said the group would prefer the house remain in place and serve as an "anchor" for the Petros Development Group's planned project rather than be demolished. She said the Commission has communicated a willingness to work with the developer and that a formal meeting with developer representative Mr. Modic is scheduled for the Commission's June 10 meeting to explore options including relocating a planned retention basin.
Council member Scott Radcliffe said he viewed preservation as "a wonderful opportunity to try to save that home" and urged waiting to hear from the developer at the upcoming Commission meeting. No members of the public spoke during this agenda item and Council did not take formal action at the Work Session.
