County, vendors plan tests after Motorola XTL‑5000 radios stop affiliating
Summary
Multiple older Motorola XTL‑5000 radios that had been used by Daniels County stopped affiliating with the system; vendors proposed importing a working code plug from a neighboring county to test and rebuild one radio and then replicate fixes if successful.

Technicians told the county they are seeing intermittent failures with older Motorola XTL‑5000 subscriber radios that previously worked on the system but now will not affiliate.
A Redtail technician described the planned troubleshooting: "We're gonna try to take one of their code plugs and see if we can dump it into one of like, maybe that base radio and see if it affiliates. And then from there just back build it..." The vendor added that the radios are decades old and "definitely past their life expectancy," but testing a working code plug from a neighboring county may show whether the problem is configuration or a hardware fault.
County staff and the sheriff were advised that this troubleshooting will require hands‑on work and could be a lower priority behind console and GTR work but is on the vendor’s list to address in the coming week.
