Commission recommends red curb at Dixon Mayfair Gate A to protect emergency access

The Transportation Advisory Commission on Dec. 18 voted to recommend that City Council approve installation of a red curb at the Dixon Mayfair Gate A on East Chestnut Street to preserve emergency access.

City engineering staff told the commission the red curb was requested by the Dixon Mayfair as part of its emergency procedures manual and that the request is supported by letters from the Solano County Sheriff's Office and the California Highway Patrol. Staff said the gate currently swings outward and can obstruct the public right-of-way; the change would reduce the risk that parked vehicles block the gate during an evacuation. "We have letters of support from the Solano County Sheriff's Office and the California Highway Patrol," the staff presentation noted.

During public comment, neighbors supported emergency-only use but raised concerns about parking loss and trash after fair events. Furman Rubio, president of the Dixon Mayfair board, told the commission the organization is planning to either have the gate open inward or convert it to a sliding gate: "We were in the process of having plans of either moving it to go inward or having a sliding gate."

After discussion about alternatives and whether the red curb could be limited to emergency-only hours, a motion was made to forward the item to City Council with a recommendation to approve the red curb. The commission called the roll and the recommendation to send the item to council passed on an affirmative vote.
