The advisory committee prepared for a joint meeting with the select board on Aug. 11 to discuss a possible FY28 override and related budget strategies. Chair (speaker 1) said Brian Ballantyne is preparing multi-year projections and asked advisory members to attend the joint session in person if possible. The committee discussed options ranging from a short, one-year override to a multi-year $10 million plan and asked staff for department-level expectations and scenarios to inform decision-making.
Al proposed a hiring freeze and that every open position be reviewed before posting; he warned against hiring with unclear revenue support and urged reviewing backfills and opportunities for consolidation. Members also discussed exploring a debt-exclusion borrowing to address pension liabilities as an alternative to a Proposition 2½ override; Al referenced a memo he had circulated describing the complexity and constraints of such borrowing.
