Community survey: Chaparral supports low-maintenance furnishings and water-conserving landscaping

Doña Ana County staff summarized public engagement for the McCombs and Empire Road project, saying an on-site public meeting and a 17-day digital survey informed design choices. "We had a 145 participants," Sabrina Schrader said, noting the survey ran from July 14 to July 31 and covered 15 topics used to guide design decisions.
Schrader said participants expressed strong preferences for low-maintenance site furnishings (94 participants noted support) and for water-conserving landscaping; staff reported about 95% support for water harvesting and low-maintenance plantings. The survey also showed a majority preference for placing trails on the west side of both Macombs and Amparo corridors and mixed preferences on lighting types (approximately one-third favored vehicle-scale lighting along roads). County staff said these community preferences steered selections for furnishings, landscaping palettes and lighting alternatives.
