Doña Ana County officials presented the design phase for the McCombs and Empire Road multiuse trail in a virtual project update for Chaparral, New Mexico. Sabrina Schrader, a planner-designer with Doña Ana County, led the presentation and described proposed additions that would expand the local multiuse trail network to more than nine miles once constructed.
Schrader said the project would add three new segments: about 1 mile on Amparo Road, roughly 1.5 miles on McCombs Road, and a short 0.125-mile segment on East Lisa Drive, with new trails built to a 10-foot width. "The existing multiuse trail spans over 6 miles...this project will add pedestrian amenities to over 0.5 a mile on East Lisa Drive and over 2.5 miles of new multiuse trail," she said. Project visuals presented by staff showed examples of vehicle-scale lighting at intersections, bench seating and alternative shading structures.
The presentation emphasized safety and connectivity, noting the trail links homes and businesses to schools, parks, community centers, health and fire services. Schrader said the design phase will produce final design documents and an operations and maintenance plan to guide future construction once funding is secured.
