Board renews several temporary-use permits for small businesses, livestock and backyard hens

The Preble County Board of Zoning Appeals approved multiple routine renewals June 23 for Temporary Use Permits. Renewals included a home-based construction business with a sign for Lance and Alana Cottingim (Case 5777), the Shafer auto repair shop with small firearms sales (Case 5778), Cory Taylor’s limited firearms sales renewal (Case 5770), Kevin Lanich’s renewal to keep four cows and a steer (Case 5774), and Angela Turner’s renewal to keep up to 12 hens (Case 5779). Staff noted prior approvals dating back to 2019–2021 for several applicants and reported no known complaints in each file.
Board members routinely moved and seconded approvals with standard one- or two-year durations and roll-call votes. Zoning Director Brad Kramer told the board the Shafer firearm license was valid through November 2028. These renewals maintain previously permitted home-based businesses and small-scale agricultural activities under Section 816.03, Letter O and related provisions.
Why it matters: These routine renewals allow small, often family-run operations to continue under local oversight and ensure the county’s permit files are current.
