At a Bowie Speaks panel hosted by the City of Bowie Diversity Committee, Josh Stevens, deputy regional director for the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), warned that everyday bias can escalate into systemic discrimination and violence. "The ADL has something called the pyramid of hate...and it goes all the way up the ladder to bias-motivated violence and genocide," Stevens said, adding that "There was 6,274, reported incidents of antisemitism in this country, and that's just what we know about."
Stevens said antisemitic tropes differ from other forms of bigotry because they sometimes inflate the perceived power of Jewish people, citing examples such as claims that Jews "control the media" or "control the banks." He urged stronger Holocaust education and post-incident school dialogues, arguing that when schools show clear responses and corrective action, trust and belonging increase. "There's a direct correlation between an increase in Holocaust education and a decrease in the types of antisemitic tropes being endorsed by children," Stevens said.
Panelists framed Stevens's remarks within a broader set of community remedies, including proactive programming, interfaith events, and civic education. Elvita Dixon, the session facilitator, said the evening's goal was to turn conversations into practical steps residents can take to reduce misunderstanding and fear.
