Carrie Camp, the city’s recreation director, told council the new aquatics facility is getting close to opening, saying, "As has been mentioned prior, we're essentially starting an aquatics division from scratch." She described installed slide and play features, the leisure-pool liner and mechanicals now operating, and that water has been placed in the competition pool as staff work through circulation and testing.
Camp and Aquatics Manager Cindy Cherney said final inspections and a training schedule are the remaining critical path items. Cherney gave council coverage math for staffing, noting the facility provides about 92 hours of pool time weekly and that coverage requires roughly 722 guard-hours: "So our goal is to have 50, but if we get to 35, they only have to work 20 hours a week," she said, explaining why recruitment and certification classes are a priority.
Camp announced a membership drive scheduled to begin June 15 that will offer two free months to new members, and previewed an inaugural "Wave Fest" weekend with a ribbon cutting on June 26, dive‑in movies and other family events. She asked council to help circulate details and to expect postcards and a QR code for event/ticket information. Camp said rentals (swim teams, high schools and meets) and reciprocity agreements with neighboring pools will help revenue once the center opens.
