Dania Beach proposes higher summer‑camp and marina fees, debates senior‑program increases

Kathy told the commission the summer camp had record enrollment this year and a wait list of 52; staff proposed raising the resident weekly rate to approximately $600 per week (resident) and moving the reduced resident fee to $4.50 for certain items. “The increase we are recommending is to the next step to bring us to the market levels... our objective is not to generate revenue from summer camp. Instead, our goal is to ensure the program remains financially sustainable,” Kathy said.
On senior programming, staff proposed a resident annual membership of $20 and a $30 triple membership to cover all three senior programs; commissioners—especially the mayor—pushed back on raising senior fees citing fixed incomes and urged caution. The commission reached consensus to proceed with revised summer‑camp fees but declined to adopt senior fee changes at the workshop and asked staff to come back with options that minimize impacts on low‑income seniors.
Finally, staff proposed modest marina schedule increases (overnight, monthly and annual rates) and a utilities fee increase (from ~15¢/kWh to 18–20¢) to reduce operating losses; commissioners asked staff to present revised schedules at the September hearing.
