Hartland board authorizes Act 244 burn‑permit request and outlines ANR compliance steps for town pit

At its July 20 meeting the Selectboard authorized the chair to sign an Act 244 burning permit request to the Air Quality & Climate Division to allow burning of clean wood in the town pit. Town staff explained the procedural step of submitting the Act 244 form to the division director, naming Mr. David Ruby as the recipient.
John Broker‑Campbell explained that "to burn clean wood in the pit; we need to fill out this form and submit it to the director." The board voted to have the chair sign the dated request. The motion was made and seconded and recorded as passing without recorded opposition.
Separately, the board reviewed an Agency of Natural Resources Notice of Alleged Violation (NOAV), dated July 7, 2026, connected to the same burn site. Town staff outlined five corrective items required by the agency and said the town will "install access control to bring us into compliance, and within 14 days, we will let them know how we will be bringing the rest of these correctives into compliance." The town will also sort piles as described in the NOAV to address compliance concerns. Selectboard members asked questions during the update and heard comments from resident Mark Peeler.
Next steps include submitting the Act 244 form to the Air Quality & Climate Division and notifying ANR within the stated 14‑day window of the town’s compliance plan.
